The Unicorn School is based in Abingdon and is this year celebrating its 20th Birthday. It is a specialist school helping children aged between 6-13 who have dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties.
Dyslexia affects children from all walks of life and as a result many children who apply to the school desperately needing the daily one to one teaching the school offers, are unable to afford to come. Last year with the help of donations from supporters like, The Dragon Sale, who were able to give a level of financial assistance to ten children, who would otherwise not have been able to benefit from the amazing skills of the specialist dyslexic teachers at the school. Children come to The Unicorn for an average of two years where they are given the skills and strategies to return to mainstream education with renewed confidence and self-esteem.
Our theme for The Unicorn's 20th Anniversary year has been, 'Be Inspired ...' and we have organised events to demonstrate the amazing creative skills the children have despite their learning difficulties.
From 21-30 September, the North Wall gallery in South Parade, Summertown will be showing an exhibition of the children's art from The Unicorn School alongside the work of a number of established dyslexic artists. There will be a private viewing from 6.30 pm on Tuesday 20th September which we would be delighted to welcome Dragon parents and staff.
With only 60 pupils at the school, and this year 22% receiving some form of bursary funding, the contribution from The Dragon Sale is a life line to changing lives of local children for the better.
